IMechE held its first Defence volunteers networking meeting on 19 July. It was held over Teams because of the train strike, but it was an interesting and invigorating day.

The next meeting will be in person at Birdcage Walk on Tuesday 10 October 11:00-15:00 with a buffet lunch and chance to have a tour of the building. Please come along if you can – or join us over Teams. Meet other current and potential volunteers from the armed forces and MOD plus your Defence Liaison Team and find out more about how we can support you in your role. A personal note of thanks from me to all the Defence engineers and technicians that I have worked with over the last seven years. I have loved it! I will be stepping down at the end of August but continuing at IMechE part-time to support the new Defence Liaison Officer until the end of November. Watch this space for news of my successor.

IMechE EngTech of the Year 2023 celebrates great technical and other contribution to an employer as well as wider outreach. Get more involved with IMechE

The Support Network is the personal and practical support charity for members of IMechE and their families. Support Network has been going since 1913 and can provide finance and specialist advice as well as volunteering opportunities. Support Network.

There are so many ways to get more involved with the Institution, to meet new people and support others throughout the profession. Here are just a few:

Become an interviewer
If you are already professionally registered as either IEng or CEng you can help others achieve the same goal by training as an Interviewer. Getting trained is easy – just a two and a half hour MS Teams training session. You can opt to observe a few interviews first or plunge straight in and join your first panel. Help us interview the next generation of professional engineers and contribute to your CPD.

Become an Industry Liaison Officer (ILO)

Use your passion for engineering to develop new connections and run events in your local area, or to support one of our national boards or committees.

‌Professional Development Support

Whether you are looking for a webinar for your own development, or wish to support your engineers and technicians as they work towards professional registration as CEng, IEng or EngTech - we can help.

All our events are free to attend with a range of formats, times and dates to suit everyone. You do not have to be a member to attend. Please do share this information with your colleagues.

‌Defence Roadshow Preparing for Armed Forces Professional Review Interview for IEng or CEng (on Teams)

Guidance for armed forces personnel on preparing for IEng and CEng interview from one of our experienced military interviewers. By the end of this session you will know how to prepare effectively for the professional review interview and what to expect.

Find out more about the routes to IEng or CEng without formal engineering qualifications at bachelors or Masters degree level.

Have you been through CLA successfully to demonstrate your career learning to degree or Master’s level? Would you like to offer your support and encouragement to others going through the process?

‌Become a Fellow

Fellow is the highest form of membership within an engineering institution. It confirms an individual’s influence, impact and support for other engineers and technicians as well as the wider community.

To become a Fellow you are expected to demonstrate certain professional qualities – categorised as Essential, Desirable and Optional. You can apply either through the Standard route, or if you are at the rank of Lt Col, Wg Cdr or Cdr, you can apply through the armed forces route.

CPOAET Jamie Partington RN IEng FIMechE, spoke recently about his route to Fellowship: “The opportunity to apply for Fellow is open to anyone. Look carefully at the criteria and very often the evidence is already there in your career, it’s a question of putting together your application.”

‌Visits to IMechE HQ, Birdcage Walk

We can host one group of visitors per month at the prestigious IMechE head office in St James’s, London. If you would be interested in bringing a group of up to around 20 personnel for a morning or afternoon, please contact us on dlo@imeche.org.
