Defence Volunteers Meeting – 20 July

Thursday 20 July 11am-3pm
IMechE, 1 Birdcage Walk, London
In recognition of the amazing work of our volunteers in defence, we would like to invite you to join us for a day dedicated to supporting you. Come and meet other current and potential volunteers from the armed forces and MOD plus your defence liaison team and find out more about how we can support you in your role.

Are you currently – or would you like to be - volunteering as an ILO (industry liaison officer) or a professional review interviewer? Do you sponsor and support people with their IMechE applications or do you volunteer with our regional or national committees?

If you would like to volunteer with us, or you already do, please join us at our London head office for a day of talks and interaction, sharing of good practice, a buffet lunch, and a tour of the building and the library.

If you would like to join us on 20 July please book your place with Jacqueline Brown on mdm@imeche.org. If you are unable to join in person because of time or costs pressure, look out for the Teams link. A full programme will be shared in the next few weeks.

Find out more about volunteering with us here.

‌Defence Lecture – 8 June 2023

Agile and Available – Engineering the Royal Navy in the 21ST Century

Speakers: IMechE incoming President Giles Hartill
Rear Admiral JJ Bailey, Director Submarine Support, Royal Navy

This year’s high-profile Defence Lecture is led by the Royal Navy and hosted by the IMechE.  The 21st century presents fundamental opportunities: an accelerating technology development agenda, an era of increasing competition and the opportunity to deliver a disruptive approach to how the Royal Navy achieves its outputs on behalf of the nation.  In response, the Royal Navy has configured itself within the wider defence environment to embrace experimentation, accelerate acquisition, and deliver unparalleled availability, to ensure it is delivering for today and ready for tomorrow.  At the heart of this solution sits its engineers – qualified and experienced, adaptable and professional.

This lecture presents contemporary examples and case studies to explain how, across the end-to-end system, professional engineers contribute to deliver the Royal Navy for the 21st Century.

IMechE, 1 Birdcage Walk, London, SW1H 9JJ. 8 June 2023. Free and open to all. Registration 18:30, Lecture starts 19:00.

WWII Aero engines specialist to speak at IMechE – 20 June

The Secret Horsepower Race: Western Front Fighter Engine Development
Calum Douglas will deliver this year’s Annual Lecture on behalf of the Institution’s Powertrain Systems and Fuels Group.

Calum has dedicated over 5 years to researching and writing a technical and intelligence history of fighter aircraft piston engine development during the Second World War. This era saw history’s greatest advances in aircraft piston technology: Calum joins us to tell the story of a desperate contest between the world's best engineers - the Secret Horsepower Race.
The lecture will cover the development of both allied and German piston aero engines during WWII including fuels and the people behind them. Amongst other things, advances in materials, superchargers, and fuel injection will be discussed.

Free to attend.

Get more involved with IMechE

There are so many ways to get more involved with the Institution, to meet new people and support others throughout the profession. Here are just a few:

Become an interviewer
If you are already professionally registered as either IEng or CEng you can help others achieve the same goal by training as an Interviewer. Getting trained is easy – just a two and a half hour MS Teams training session. You can opt to observe a few interviews first or plunge straight in and join your first panel. Help us interview the next generation of professional engineers and contribute to your CPD.

Email Kathryn Devine on assessortraining@imeche.org for more information.

Become an Industry Liaison Officer (ILO)
Volunteer to represent IMechE and to support and sponsor colleagues to become professionally registered. Find out more here Industry Liaison Officer. See who else is volunteering as an ILO Find an ILO.

Join a regional or area panel or a national committee
Use your passion for engineering to develop new connections and run events in your local area, or to support one of our national boards or committees.

Find your local area or regional group here: Member networks near you
Find out more about serving on one of our national committees here: Volunteer Assessor

Use your Standard Learning Credits and access training for £45

Would you like to join together with others to take a short IMechE course – and use your SLCs? If you can find a group of 6 people willing to take one of our bite-sized technical courses – then you can access training for only £45.  See more information here - Armed forces training scheme (imeche.org)

Choose from one of these titles:

  • Technical Report Writing
  • Introduction to Structured Problem Solving
  • Hazard Identification

Contact dlo@imeche.org if you are interested.

‌Professional Development Support

Whether you are looking for a webinar for your own development, or wish to support your engineers and technicians as they work towards professional registration as CEng, IEng or EngTech - we can help.

All our events are free to attend with a range of formats, times and dates to suit everyone. You do not have to be a member to attend. Please do share this information with your colleagues.

We can also arrange MS Teams/telephone appointments for anyone who has any queries at all in relation to professional registration or upgrading their membership. Please contact Jill Dwyer, Business Development Manager – Defence on dlo@imeche.org.

‌Become a Fellow

Fellow is the highest form of membership within an engineering institution. It confirms an individual’s influence, impact and support for other engineers and technicians as well as the wider community.

To become a Fellow you are expected to demonstrate certain professional qualities – categorised as Essential, Desirable and Optional. You can apply either through the Standard route, or if you are at the rank of Lt Col, Wg Cdr or Cdr, you can apply through the armed forces route.

CPOAET Jamie Partington RN IEng FIMechE, spoke recently about his route to Fellowship: “The opportunity to apply for Fellow is open to anyone. Look carefully at the criteria and very often the evidence is already there in your career, it’s a question of putting together your application.”

You can read more about the qualities expected of a Fellow here and join one of our dedicated Fellow workshops online – the next one is 30 June or ask for support dlo@imeche.org.
