Defence Update
October 2023

Book the Defence Roadshow to come to your site

Defence Liaison Officer Lara Mallett and Membership Development Executive Jack Arundel are here to support you. Let us come and explain to your personnel how the Institution can help their development with funding, learning opportunities and guidance on the route to professional registration, plus one-to-one support.

Ask for a visit to your site and get the information and insight into what an engineering institution can do for you and your personnel. Email dlo@imeche.org to request a visit.  See our forthcoming visits here Get more involved with IMechE.

Use your local ILO volunteers to link in with IMechE

IMechE now has around 30 volunteer Industry Liaison Officers (ILOs) based at military camps and units around the UK and overseas. ILOs are there as a local point of contact for questions about professional registration, IMechE and what it can provide and as a sponsor for your application.

We are grateful to our ILOs who give this information and support on a weekly basis.  See a list of our current ILOs here Find an ILO (imeche.org). If there is no ILO at your location and you would like to volunteer let us know on ilo@imeche.org and our colleague Jacqueline Brown will tell you how.

Continuing professional development with our support

Use our online and in-person lectures, networking events and conferences to keep up your CPD. IMechE has a host of free resources as well as paid-for training programmes and seminars. Plus, you can use our tool Career Developer to log and reflect on your activity.

Get more involved with IMechE

There are so many ways to get more involved with the Institution, to meet new people and support others throughout the profession. Here are just a few:

Become an interviewer
If you are already professionally registered as either IEng or CEng you can help others achieve the same goal by training as an Interviewer. Getting trained is easy – just a two and a half hour MS Teams training session. You can opt to observe a few interviews first or plunge straight in and join your first panel. Help us interview the next generation of professional engineers and contribute to your CPD.

Email Kathryn Devine on assessortraining@imeche.org for more information.

Become an Industry Liaison Officer (ILO)
Volunteer to represent IMechE and to support and sponsor colleagues to become professionally registered. Find out more here Industry Liaison Officer. See who else is volunteering as an ILO Find an ILO.

Find your local area or regional group here: Member networks near you
Find out more about serving on one of our national committees here: Volunteer Assessor

‌Use your Standard Learning Credits and access training for £45

Would you like to join together with others to take a short IMechE course – and use your SLCs? If you can find a group of 6 people willing to take one of our bite-sized technical courses – then you can access training for only £45.  See more information here - Armed forces training scheme (imeche.org)

Choose from one of these titles:

  • Technical Report Writing
  • Introduction to Structured Problem Solving
  • Hazard Identification

Contact dlo@imeche.org if you are interested.

‌Professional Development Support

Whether you are looking for a webinar for your own development, or wish to support your engineers and technicians as they work towards professional registration as CEng, IEng or EngTech - we can help.

All our events are free to attend with a range of formats, times and dates to suit everyone. You do not have to be a member to attend. Please do share this information with your colleagues.

We can also arrange MS Teams/telephone appointments for anyone who has any queries at all in relation to professional registration or upgrading their membership. Please contact dlo@imeche.org.

‌Become a Fellow

Fellow is the highest form of membership within an engineering institution. It confirms an individual’s influence, impact and support for other engineers and technicians as well as the wider community.

To become a Fellow you are expected to demonstrate certain professional qualities – categorised as Essential, Desirable and Optional. You can apply either through the Standard route, or if you are at the rank of Lt Col, Wg Cdr or Cdr, you can apply through the armed forces route.

CPOAET Jamie Partington RN IEng FIMechE, spoke recently about his route to Fellowship: “The opportunity to apply for Fellow is open to anyone. Look carefully at the criteria and very often the evidence is already there in your career, it’s a question of putting together your application.”

You can read more about the qualities expected of a Fellow here and join one of our dedicated Fellow workshops online - the next one:

1 November - 12noon-1pm – Booking here.

‌Visits to IMechE HQ, Birdcage Walk

We can host one group of visitors per month at the prestigious IMechE head office in St James’s, London. If you would be interested in bringing a group of up to around 20 personnel for a morning or afternoon, please contact us on dlo@imeche.org.
